Neighbors Organize to Get the Lead Out
At the meeting Mayor Baraka encouraged Newark residents not to listen to “scare tactics,” and emphasized that the city’s water is not the issue. He called for 1,000 volunteers to take action to canvass neighborhoods and collect signatures to initiate what may become the largest public works project in a lifetime. He said the administration is working to ensure that Newark residents are contracted to replace the pipes, and that with our help, the process will only take two years to complete.

Equal Rights Amendment: How Long Must We Wait?
In 1923, Alice Paul, a leader of the women’s suffrage movement from Mount Laurel, New Jersey, introduced the Equal Rights Amendment in Seneca Falls, New York, the site of the first women’s rights convention in 1848. The proposed amendment would guarantee that the rights affirmed by the United States Constitution are held equally by all citizens without regard to their sex, and it was introduced to Congress that year and reintroduced in every subsequent session for half a century.
