We’ll Work for Change!
Force the Issue NJ was founded in July of 2016 by former volunteers for the Bernie Sanders campaign in Hudson County, NJ. Our organization is open to all who believe that participatory democracy cannot be limited to the choices we make in the voting booth or the noises we make at a protest rally, but must also encompass a holistic view of social activism, including political action, civic engagement and volunteer service, where we put our progressive ideals to work to improve our communities, our nation and our world.
Building the Movement
Our goal is to serve to build and sustain an independent, unified and credible progressive movement throughout New Jersey. We believe that such a movement can only be successful if it is broadly-based and draws strength from each constituency and community. We believe that a well-organized progressive coalition in the Garden State can play an effective role by amplifying the strength of worthy organizations, movements and campaigns, and empowering the individual volunteer, activist or citizen to find opportunities to make an impact, wherever and whenever they can.
Platforms for Progress
Our mission is to develop and host interactive online platforms to help volunteers, activists and citizens connect with organizations and organizers that are active in the state of New Jersey. Our two initial projects are:
- Crowd-sourcing a comprehensive “searchable and sort-able” Directory of Community Organizations that are concerned with serving our communities, increasing civic engagement and pursuing progressive change at all levels of government.
- Creating an Interactive Community Calendar to help individuals find relevant and accessible opportunities to serve or participate locally based on their personal interest and availability, and to help organizations drive and target recruitment by connecting to a large audience of potential volunteers.
In the future, we hope to further enhance these platforms by creating a interactive tools focused on progressive change in New Jersey, featuring individual and organization profiles and hosting focused forums for communication and collaboration.
Media, Education & Advocacy
We look forward to collaborating with partners on opportunities to educate the public on critical issues through community forums, lectures, documentary film screenings and by creating media for this website. From time to time, we will also directly sponsor voter registration drives to broaden the electorate, and organize petitioning and letter-writing campaigns to hold elected officials accountable.
Our Progressive Values
Force the Issue NJ practices a broad-based and pragmatic progressivism – privileging action above ideology. We value social, economic and racial justice, civic engagement, good government, personal liberty, and the protection and preservation of our natural resources. As progressives, we believe that the advocacy of innovative and compassionate government policies goes hand-in-hand with direct participation in our communities to address the issues we care about. We gravitate towards strategic and direct initiatives to resolve these issues rather than simply engaging in expressive protest without a plan to engage the community and work towards real and sustainable change.
